Some people think that the antarctic explorers are motivated more by self-glory than improved knowledge for the world. These people say that the explorers wanted to be famous and to make money for themselves.
Other people say that many of the explorers were more interested in science and learning, and that to go to the Antarctic is to take a big risk.
These days many explorers go the Antarctic, and sometimes they run into danger and have to be rescued. To rescue people in the Antarctic is very expensive. At the moment the explorers do not pay anything to be rescued - governments pay.
Do you think this is fair or should explorers have to pay to be resuced?
