Culturally Appropriate Care 1

Standard 7.3 in the Nursing and Midwifery Code (2015) states that:

' Nurses and Midwives use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication methods, and consider cultural sensitivities, to better understand and respond to people’s personal and health needs '.

One two other NMC publications mention the importance of recognising the impact that culture can have on: health decisions; health outcomes; and as a key element of person-centred care. A small number of research studies are starting to appear and organisations, such as NHS Education Scotland, are producing information and resources relating to Cultural Competence . However, compared to other countries the UK appears to be lagging behind.

What do you think? Watch this video from Canada before beginning.

It is proposed that nurses trained in the UK are unable to deliver culturally appropriate care
